The fear of being a woman in South Africa due to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a distressing reality. Women in the country often live in constant fear and anxiety, knowing that they are at a higher risk of experiencing violence solely because of their gender. GBV creates an atmosphere of insecurity, limiting women’s freedom to move about and live their lives without constant worry. Women are afraid to walk alone at night, use public transportation, or even be in their own homes, as these spaces are not always safe. The fear of harassment, assault, or even murder hangs over their heads, casting a dark shadow on their daily existence.
In a recent incident, the body of aymissing woman was found along Baden Powell Drive after being brutally raped. The 37-year-old woman’s body, partially unclothed, was found between the townships of Khayelitsha and Strandfontein. This shocking incident has left the local community desperate for answers, as the circumstances surrounding her death remain mysterious.
Early in the morning, a passerby came across the distressing scene, stumbling upon Cebisa’s motionless body concealed among the bushes. She was wearing only her underwear. The investigators are facing challenges in uncovering the truth behind this tragic event, adding to the community’s anguish and prompting them to demand justice for this abhorrent crime.
Unfortunately, this heartbreaking tragedy is not an isolated occurrence but the most recent in a series of violent incidents along Baden Powell Drive. The community is filled with sorrow and anger, grieving the loss of Cebisa Cece Vulangengqele, fondly known as Cece.
