The much anticipated Netflix documentary uncovering the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa came out today on Netflix and Mzansi has plenty of opinions and questions after viewing the first episode of this special. Senzo, Murder of a Soccer Star is the titled of this Netflix special and promises to be a must-watch for all football fanatics in and out of South Africa and to bring forth answers about the unforeseen murder of Meyiwa.

The soccer player was gunned dead at 27 years old outside his then girlfriend and baby mama Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus on the East Rand on October, 2014, and after nearly a decade later, there’s still no conviction for his brutal murder but speculations on who the killer might be keep resurfacing.

It was first reported after Meyiwa was initially shot and killed that the cause of death had been a gunshot wound following a botched robbery, but then the story changed and became more confusing with the alleged killer only being arrested some time last year.

This docu-series by Storyscope and Real Eyes is executively produced by Thandi Davids, Neil Brandt and Tendeka Matatu and directed by Sara Blecher and will have the likes of sports presenter and analyst Robert Marawa feature alongside former head of the Hawks Shadrack Sibiya and advocate Gerrie Nel as well as Senzo’s father Sam Meyiwa, who had long been campaigning to have justice served for his son, before passing on following a stroke in 2019.

In this five part documentary, South Africans will also get to see hard hitting interviews with high profile role players, while diving into the privacy of the Meyiwa family’s ongoing anguish and sorrow.

None of the implicated families have put out an official statement since the premiere of the series but Kelly’s sister Zandile Khumalo Gumede shared her reaction to the news about this documentary.

Zandile in an interview with Daily Sun exclaimed, “I don’t think there’s anything a documentary can do to help the situation, it’s people just making money out of an unfortunate situation and I don’t need to clear my name for anything.”

“Nobody approached me. No feelings really. I don’t even know what it’s really about so it’s hard for me to feel anything. All I’m hoping is that my name won’t be on the docie without my consent because then I will have a problem. However, my management did get in touch with Netflix management about that part. I will await feedback from them,” she said.

Since the premiere of the first episode today, fans have had their own opinions and speculations but what seems to be a common thread is The one question on everybody’s lips – will this documentary bring clarity and answers to the questions who and why?

In a tweet that has gained more impressions than the others, one user hints that the docu-series does reveal who the killer is. “The truth about who killed Senzo Meyiwa might be on Season 1, episode 4, at 19 to 22 minutes. Watch it for yourself.”

Another Twitter user, (@Mtombenhle124) wrote, “I still maintain that everyone who was in that house that night knows exactly what happened to Senzo.” She added, “May his spirit continue fighting until the real truth is exposed.”

Another user tweeted that the docu-series will be useless to them if it ends up not revealing who the real killer of Senzo Meyiwa is.

The docu-series will continue to explore whether the suspects are really responsible for the murder of Meyiwa, or whether they are just covering up something even more sinister.
