Deputy President Paul Mashatile is currently recovering from a health-related setback and has been booked off from official duties for some time, following a minor surgical procedure.

The Presidency confirmed earlier this month that Mashatile underwent the procedure and was recovering well. President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the Deputy President and expressed satisfaction with his progress, saying he had been assured that Mashatile would return to work soon.

Mashatile’s absence from public engagements has attracted attention, particularly because of his prominent role in government as South Africa’s Deputy President. However, official information indicates that his absence is linked to his recovery and that there is no indication that he has been removed from his responsibilities.

The Presidency has not disclosed detailed information about the nature of the procedure or the condition that required medical attention. Officials have instead emphasised that the Deputy President is recuperating and is expected to resume his duties once he has fully recovered.

Mashatile, who has served as Deputy President since March 2023, remains an important figure in President Ramaphosa’s administration. He has undertaken a range of government responsibilities, including parliamentary duties, oversight visits and engagements on behalf of the executive.

His recent health concerns come after a previous public incident in which he became unwell during an event in Limpopo. At the time, Mashatile attributed his collapse to suspected food poisoning.

Despite public interest surrounding his current absence, the government has provided reassurance about his recovery. President Ramaphosa’s visit and subsequent statement were intended to confirm that Mashatile was receiving medical attention and progressing positively.

As he continues his recovery, attention will remain on when he is medically cleared to return to his full programme of government duties. For now, officials have urged the public to respect his privacy while he recuperates.

Mashatile’s office is expected to provide further updates should there be any significant developments concerning his return to official duties.
