KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has intensified his allegations against suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. Mkhwanazi claims that an investigation into a trust fund linked to the minister is a strategic move to derail other corruption probes.

Speaking before his appearance in Parliament, Mkhwanazi stated the trust fund investigation is a “calculated” effort to pressure him and shift focus from his previous claims. These claims include the unlawful disbanding of a special investigative unit, the deletion of over 120 case files, and a conspiracy involving the minister and an alleged crime figure.

The allegations have prompted multiple official inquiries. The Public Protector is investigating whether Mchunu misled Parliament, a parliamentary committee is hearing testimony, and the ANC’s Integrity Commission is reviewing the matter. Mchunu is currently on special leave.

The outcome of these proceedings could have significant implications for the integrity of South Africa’s criminal justice system. Mkhwanazi is expected to present further evidence to the parliamentary committee.
