The body of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, will be repatriated to South Africa on Thursday night, the family confirmed in a statement released earlier today.

Mthethwa, a seasoned politician and diplomat, passed away in Paris last week, prompting an outpouring of grief from government officials, colleagues, and citizens who remembered him for his years of dedicated public service.

Family spokesperson Thandeka Mthethwa expressed deep appreciation for the support received from both the South African government and the diplomatic community. “We are grateful for the love, compassion, and assistance shown to our family during this painful time. Arrangements have been made for his body to return home on Thursday night, where he will be laid to rest with dignity,” she said.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed that the repatriation process has been coordinated in accordance with diplomatic protocols. Senior officials from the South African Embassy in Paris will accompany Mthethwa’s remains on the journey home.

Mthethwa, who previously served as Minister of Police and Minister of Arts and Culture, was appointed as South Africa’s Ambassador to France in 2023. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen bilateral relations and promote South African culture abroad.

Upon arrival in South Africa, Mthethwa’s body will be received by government representatives before being transported to KwaZulu-Natal, where funeral and memorial details will be announced in due course.

His passing marks the end of a distinguished career in public service. Tributes continue to pour in, honoring Mthethwa as a statesman who dedicated his life to serving his country both at home and on the international stage.
