Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala Under Scrutiny Over Ties to Lesotho Prime Minister

South African businessman and political figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is facing growing scrutiny over his close relationship with Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Sam Matekane. The connection, which has reportedly deepened over the years, is sparking debate about its potential impact on politics, diplomacy, and business between the two nations.

Sources describe the two men as having a long-standing friendship, with Matlala frequently attending private events hosted by Matekane in Maseru. Both are said to share business interests in sectors like agriculture and logistics. However, concerns have been raised over whether this personal bond could affect official dealings between South Africa and Lesotho—an accusation Matlala strongly denies.

Political analysts warn that while cross-border business ties are common, the mix of personal relationships and political influence risks creating conflicts of interest. “The issue isn’t the friendship itself,” said governance expert Dr. Lesego Molele. “It’s whether this connection is being used to gain preferential treatment in government contracts or bilateral agreements.”

Matlala’s spokesperson rejected the claims, calling them baseless and politically driven. They stressed that his relationship with Matekane is strictly personal, based on shared values rather than financial or political motives.

The Lesotho Prime Minister’s office defended Matlala, calling him a “trusted friend” who has supported development projects in the country. However, opposition groups in Lesotho have demanded more transparency in the government’s interactions with foreign business leaders.

In South Africa, Matlala’s critics argue that his ties to Matekane could unfairly influence trade negotiations. South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has not commented directly but stated it keeps track of issues that might affect relations with neighboring countries.

As attention remains on Matlala, the situation highlights the fine line between personal diplomacy and official state affairs. Whether this friendship stays private or becomes a larger controversy may depend on how openly future dealings between the two are conducted.
