EFF leader Julius Malema has publicly endorsed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, calling him one of South Africa’s few principled police leaders.
Speaking at the EFF’s Youth Day rally in Durban, Malema praised Mkhwanazi for resisting political interference while tackling the province’s high crime rates. “We fully support General Mkhwanazi because he does his job without fear, even when it upsets politicians,” Malema told supporters.
The endorsement comes amid rumors that Mkhwanazi could face removal following his recent crackdown on politically-linked crime figures. Malema warned the government against targeting the commissioner, stating: “If they remove him, it will be political, not because he’s failing. South Africa needs more honest officers like him.”
While some see the EFF’s support as a potential political move, Malema denied this, saying their backing is based solely on Mkhwanazi’s integrity. The police commissioner hasn’t responded but has previously vowed to remain impartial in his work.
The EFF’s stance highlights ongoing concerns about policing in KZN, where violent crime remains a major challenge. The party’s vocal support is likely to keep scrutiny on police leadership in the province.
