President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to submit its final report to 25 January 2027.

The commission had previously been given until 16 November 2026 to complete its work and submit the report. The Presidency announced the latest extension on Saturday, 19 September, saying it would allow the commission to process further evidence, including testimony from experts who have made recommendations relevant to its terms of reference. The Presidency described it as the final extension.

The commission has welcomed the additional time. Spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the extension would allow the inquiry to hear outstanding testimony and write its final report.

The commission has been holding public hearings since 17 September 2025 and has heard evidence from more than 100 witnesses.

It was established in July 2025 following serious allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about alleged criminal infiltration, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system. Retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga chairs the inquiry.

Its work has included testimony on alleged criminal infiltration of law enforcement agencies, the Political Killings Task Team and other matters within its terms of reference. The commission recently resumed public hearings after a two-week break, with evidence focusing on the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and allegations of criminal networks and collusion involving officers.

The commission now has until 25 January 2027 to complete its outstanding work and submit its final report.
