Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been deported from South Africa and barred from re-entering the country for the next five years.

His departure on Sunday, 18 May, follows a lengthy legal process and a recent decision by the Department of Home Affairs declaring him a “prohibited person” under immigration laws.

Omotoso, the leader of Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted by the Gqeberha High Court on 2 April 2025. The court dismissed all 32 charges against him, including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering, citing insufficient evidence and flaws in the prosecution’s case.

Despite the acquittal, authorities determined that his stay in South Africa was unlawful. He was arrested on 10 May in East London after the Minister of Home Affairs denied his appeal against the prohibited status.

Released two days later while awaiting a judicial review, Omotoso ultimately opted for voluntary deportation instead of prolonging the legal battle.

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that immigration and police officials escorted him out of the country via OR Tambo International Airport.

Spokesperson Siya Qoza stated, “He is barred from returning to South Africa for five years. If he wishes to re-enter after that period, he will need to apply for reconsideration.”
