According to Fannie Masemola, the police are aggressively pursuing leads in their pursuit of the perpetrators of the recent violence that broke out during a demonstration in East London. After the disturbance, Masemola spoke out to confirm that the South African Police Service has sent detectives to collect evidence and find those responsible for the looting, burning, and public violence.

“Those responsible will be brought to justice,” he promised, adding that they were following up on all leads. The supposed crowning of a Nigerian “king” in KuGompo City triggered protests that escalated into violence, which has caused tensions to rise across the Eastern Cape. Clashes between protesters and police, property damage, and arson were all outcomes of what started as a peaceful march. The police would not stand for illegal activities that masquerade as protests, Masemola stressed.

He pleaded with the public to help the police make arrests by coming forward with information, assuring them that their identity would be kept secret.Multiple individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the disturbance; those accused are anticipated to face accusations spanning from acts of public violence to wilful destruction of property. While investigations continue, authorities have not dismissed the possibility of additional arrests. The head of police force lauded the actions of the ground troops in controlling the situation and acknowledged the vital contribution of the Public Order Policing units in stopping the situation from getting worse.

Leaders in the community have joined the chorus demanding answers, saying anyone guilty of acts of violence should face the full force of the law. In order to restore public confidence and avert such events, analysts think that rapid arrests and prosecutions are crucial.Masemola emphasised that people should exercise their freedom to protest, but that they should do so in a lawful and nonviolent manner.

The situation in KuGompo City is being closely watched by the authorities, who have stepped up patrols and visibility operations to keep the peace and avoid any additional disturbances.Continued efforts to stabilise the region have prompted pleas for residents to stay calm and cooperate with law police.
