In a dramatic turn of events, two suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were shot and killed in a fierce gunfight with police in the New Glasgow area of Verulam, north of Durban, on Friday morning. The shootout occurred during a high-stakes police operation aimed at intercepting a gang suspected of involvement in a series of CIT heists in the region.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the suspects had been under surveillance for several weeks. Authorities had been monitoring the gang’s movements, suspecting them of planning another heist. Acting on intelligence, the police launched a tactical operation to apprehend the suspects before they could strike again.

“At approximately 9:30 a.m., police units approached a vehicle matching the description of one used in previous robberies. As officers closed in, the suspects opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire,” said Netshiunda.

Two suspects were fatally wounded in the shootout, while two others managed to escape. Police are currently tracking the remaining suspects. “We are pursuing all available leads to bring the fugitives to justice,” Netshiunda added.

During the operation, police recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, from the suspects’ vehicle, which was also seized for forensic examination. No officers were injured in the incident, and law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if the suspects are linked to other criminal activities.

The police hailed the success of the operation, which is part of a wider effort to crack down on the surge of CIT robberies that have plagued South Africa.

Residents of Verulam were left shocked by the gunfight, with many expressing concerns over the rise of violent crime in the area. Police have reassured the community that they are committed to restoring safety and stability.

Authorities have urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspects to come forward, offering a reward for credible tips that could lead to their arrest.

This operation serves as a clear reminder of law enforcement’s determination to combat the growing wave of CIT heists and ensure those involved face justice.
