DA Gauteng Leaders Hold Secret Talks With John Steenhuisen & Party’s Western Cape Bloc Is Not Happy

Behind closed doors at a Sandton hotel on Tuesday evening, Democratic Alliance Gauteng provincial leaders sat down with federal party structures for a meeting that nobody announced, nobody confirmed, and almost nobody was supposed to know happened. The gathering drew senior figures from the province’s internal caucus alongside key federal councillors, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the discussions. John Steenhuisen’s inner circle coordinated the session, and the timing — sandwiched between a bruising national executive committee cycle and rising noise from within Gauteng structures — was no accident.

The meeting allegedly centred on mounting frustration among Gauteng representatives who feel sidelined in federal decision-making, particularly around candidate lists and provincial resource allocation ahead of the 2026 local government elections. Sources told this reporter that at least three senior Gauteng figures raised concerns about the federal leadership’s communication style, with one allegedly describing the relationship as “a one-way road.” No formal resolutions emerged from the gathering, and participants dispersed without issuing any joint statement or briefing.

DA national spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube had not responded to written questions by the time of publication. Federal Council chairperson Mike Moriarty confirmed only that “internal engagements occur regularly across provinces” when contacted by this journalist, declining to address specifics. Steenhuisen’s office directed queries to national communications, which remained unreachable throughout Wednesday afternoon.

Tension inside the DA’s Gauteng structures has simmered since the coalition negotiations of 2024, when several provincial heavyweights felt their input was overridden by Cape Town-based advisors. The fracture deepened following boundary demarcation disputes in Tshwane and Johannesburg metro councils, where ward boundaries shifted in ways that disadvantaged sitting DA councillors. Veteran observers of the party’s internal culture note that Gauteng has historically chafed under what members privately call “the Mother City grip.”

Outside the hotel entrance on Tuesday night, a man in a navy blazer stood near the revolving doors for nearly forty minutes, checking his phone repeatedly, refusing valet parking — waiting, it seemed, for someone who never came out.

Whether this informal gathering settles grievances or merely delays a deeper reckoning remains the central uncertainty facing DA leadership right now. Elections are fourteen months away, Gauteng remains the country’s most populous battleground, and the question haunting every corridor of federal headquarters is whether the party can hold its largest province together long enough to compete.
