Kaizer Chiefs secured a 1-0 win over Scottland FC of Zimbabwe in the annual Toyota Cup at a packed Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday, handing new coach Fernando da Cruz his first trophy with the club.
Mfundo Vilakazi scored the only goal of the match in the first half, pouncing on a loose ball inside the box and calmly slotting it past the goalkeeper. His pace caused problems for the Scottland defence throughout the opening period.
Da Cruz gave a start to new signing Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, while other new recruits, goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner and defender Thabo Moloisane, began on the bench. Scottland coach Norman Mapeza included former Chiefs players Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona in his starting line-up.
Chiefs controlled much of the first half and created the better chances, though they still lacked a sharp finish in the final third. Scottland grew into the game as the half went on but struggled to test Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
Chiefs suffered a setback just before the break when defender Bradley Cross picked up a knock and was replaced by Given Msimango.
The second half saw fewer clear chances. Scottland’s best opportunity came in the 57th minute when Musona delivered a good cross, but Petersen was quick to come off his line and collect the ball. Chiefs came close to doubling their lead in the 72nd minute when Itiosa Ighodaro headed over the bar.
In added time, Scottland were awarded a free kick in a promising position, but Musona’s shot went over the crossbar, allowing Chiefs to hold on for the win.
