Samkelo Maseko allegedly paid R20,000 a month by ANC

Calls Grow for Investigation Into Alleged R20,000 ANC Campaign Payment

Political controversy is mounting around Samkelo Maseko following allegations circulating online that he was paid R20,000 a month to campaign for the African National Congress (ANC).

The claims have prompted calls from critics and members of the public for a formal investigation rather than allowing the allegations to remain unverified social-media speculation.

Those calling for an investigation argue that any payments made for political campaigning should be properly accounted for and assessed against the ANC’s internal rules, electoral regulations and applicable South African law.

The central issue is not simply whether money changed hands, but whether the alleged payments were authorised, properly disclosed and consistent with the rules governing political activity.

Critics have also called for transparency from both Maseko and the ANC, particularly if documentary evidence exists that could either substantiate or disprove the allegations. A clear response could help prevent speculation from spreading further.

It is alleged that Samkelo Maseko received R20,000 per month during the elections to campaign for the ANC.

If the payments are ultimately proven, questions could arise about potential disciplinary action within the party and, depending on the circumstances and applicable law, whether the matter should also be referred to the relevant authorities.

At this stage, however, the allegations should not be treated as established fact without credible evidence or an official finding.

The controversy highlights a broader concern over money and political influence in South Africa. With public confidence in political institutions under continued scrutiny, allegations involving campaign funding are likely to attract significant attention.

The key question now is whether the ANC or an appropriate independent authority will investigate the claims, establish what actually happened and make the findings public.

If the alleged payments are proven, should the matter remain an internal party disciplinary issue, or should it also be referred for possible criminal investigation?
