Tensions erupted during a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday when Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and Patriotic Alliance (PA) MP Marlon Daniels engaged in a heated exchange.

The confrontation took place during discussions surrounding the impeachment proceedings involving President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ongoing Phala Phala controversy. What began as a disagreement over legal and procedural matters soon turned personal.

During the debate, Malema strongly criticised Daniels’ contributions, dismissing his arguments and directing harsh remarks at the PA parliamentarian. In comments that drew reactions from fellow committee members, Malema reportedly labelled Daniels a “fool” and “stupid,” prompting objections from some participants.

Daniels responded to the insults, leading to a tense verbal confrontation that briefly interrupted proceedings. Members of the committee and officials stepped in to restore order as the exchange threatened to sidetrack discussions on the key issues before the committee.

The incident underscored the deep political divisions surrounding the Phala Phala matter, which continues to spark disagreement among parties represented in Parliament. The committee is currently examining questions of accountability and the possibility of impeachment proceedings against the President.

Political observers noted that the clash reflected the increasingly combative atmosphere within Parliament, particularly as parties prepare for important political contests at both national and local levels. Some members expressed concern that personal attacks could undermine the decorum and integrity expected in parliamentary debates.

Following the disruption, the committee resumed its work and continued deliberations on the legal and procedural aspects of the impeachment process.

Neither Malema nor Daniels issued an immediate public response after the incident, but the altercation is expected to attract considerable attention due to the prominence of both politicians and the sensitivity of the issues under discussion.

The latest dispute adds to a long list of fiery exchanges in South Africa’s Parliament, where political rivalries often result in tense debates. As the committee presses ahead with its examination of the Phala Phala matter, attention will remain focused on how parties manage the highly contentious process in the coming weeks.
