President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated his message for South Africans to embrace a friendly stance towards fellow Africans while emphasizing the necessity for all individuals entering or residing in the country to adhere to immigration laws.

His remarks arise amid ongoing public anxiety regarding migration, undocumented immigrants, job opportunities, strain on public services, and border security. In recent times, the government has attempted to clarify the difference between lawful migration and illegal immigration.

Ramaphosa recognizes that South Africans have valid apprehensions about immigration, especially in areas grappling with unemployment, poverty, crime, and pressure on essential services. However, he contends that these issues should not incite hostility towards foreign nationals as a whole.

He noted that South Africa has a rich history of migration and upholds significant cultural, historical, and familial ties with other African nations. Numerous communities across the region share languages, heritage, and customs that predate contemporary national borders.

Simultaneously, Ramaphosa has stressed that showing solidarity with fellow Africans does not equate to disregarding immigration rules. He insisted that those entering the country must do so legally, and individuals working or running businesses should possess the necessary permits and authorizations.

“We must not let these concerns lead to xenophobia against individuals from other African nations or any part of the world,” Ramaphosa stated during his Freedom Day speech.

The government has outlined various strategies to manage migration, such as bolstering border security, enhancing the enforcement of immigration and labor laws, tackling corruption in the immigration system, and addressing lapses in existing legislation.

Furthermore, Ramaphosa has consistently emphasized that immigration enforcement falls under authorized governmental bodies. It is prohibited for members of the public or community groups to stop people on the streets or request proof of nationality.

The President has cautioned against xenophobia, Afrophobia, violence, and vigilantism, while underscoring the importance of enforcing immigration laws.

His administration also posits that migration, when properly managed, can boost economic activity. The government recognizes the significance of lawful tourism, investment, skill enhancement, and business operations while continuing to mitigate irregular entry.

Thus, the discourse revolves around achieving a balance between effective border management and upholding constitutional protections and human dignity. Ramaphosa maintains that South Africa can uphold its immigration laws while respecting foreign nationals and its historical ties to the African continent.
