Controversial activist and former broadcaster Ngizwe Mchunu has strongly rejected a legal demand issued by Julius Malema, refusing to apologise or pay R1 million in damages over alleged defamatory remarks.

The dispute stems from comments attributed to Mchunu in which he allegedly made serious allegations about the Economic Freedom Fighters leader, prompting Malema’s legal team to demand an immediate retraction, public apology, and financial compensation for reputational harm.

In his latest response, Mchunu dismissed the legal threat and doubled down on his criticism of Malema, insisting he will not retract his statements or show remorse.

He reportedly said he would not “speak about a dead snake,” a remark widely interpreted as a direct insult toward the EFF leader. Mchunu further alleged that Malema had “sold out South Africans to foreigners,” repeating earlier claims that triggered the legal action.

The outspoken activist also rejected any fear of court proceedings, saying he is prepared to face legal consequences if necessary. He further stated that Malema should “just go to jail and serve his sentence,” adding the phrase “maka hambe ayozichamela,” a strongly worded expression that has since circulated widely on social media.

The exchange has intensified tensions between the two public figures, both of whom are known for controversial political commentary in South Africa. Supporters of Malema argue that the remarks are defamatory and damaging, while Mchunu’s followers view his statements as political expression and criticism of leadership.

Legal experts note that if the matter proceeds to court, it will likely hinge on whether the statements are proven as fact or opinion, and whether they meet the threshold for defamation under South African law.

At this stage, neither side has indicated any willingness to settle, suggesting the dispute may escalate into formal legal proceedings.
