The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has confirmed a significant leadership shift after its Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Dunga Leko, officially resigned from his position as a proportional representation (PR) councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Leko’s resignation comes amid his redeployment to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, marking a strategic move by the party to strengthen its presence at the provincial level. His transition signals a new chapter in his political career, following years of influence in local government.

During his tenure in Ekurhuleni, Leko held several key leadership roles. He served as the EFF Caucus Party Leader, where he was instrumental in shaping the party’s agenda within the municipal council. In addition, he chaired the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), a critical oversight body tasked with ensuring transparency and accountability in municipal spending.

Leko also held the influential position of Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, where he was responsible for overseeing the city’s financial management, budgeting processes, and fiscal policy direction. His time in office was widely regarded by party members as impactful, with the EFF crediting him for his commitment to governance and oversight.

The party described his resignation as part of a broader redeployment strategy rather than a departure under negative circumstances. Such moves are common within the EFF, which frequently reallocates leaders to positions where they are deemed most effective.

While the EFF has yet to announce Leko’s replacement in Ekurhuleni, his exit leaves a notable gap in the municipality’s political landscape. Observers say his move to the provincial legislature could elevate his influence, particularly in shaping policy and advancing the party’s priorities at a higher level.

Further announcements regarding new appointments are expected in the coming days.
