New Arrests in Russia Recruitment Case; Former Official Gives Contradictory Testimony

Two separate political developments unfolded this week involving high-profile figures: new arrests linked to a scheme to recruit South Africans for the Ukraine war, and controversial testimony at a national corruption inquiry.

In the ongoing case involving citizens allegedly sent to fight for Russia, authorities have made new arrests. The scandal, previously linked to former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, is expanding. Jacob Zuma himself is now cited in connection with the scheme. Calls to repatriate the affected men have so far been unsuccessful.

In a separate matter, former Ekurhuleni city manager Dr. Imogen Mashabi delivered testimony at the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry into criminality and corruption. Her statements on Monday regarding a suspended police chief were described by officials as confusing and inconsistent, frustrating the commission’s proceedings.
