Mkhwanazi’s Prison Letter Testimony Draws Credibility Fire in Parliament

On March 18, 2026, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Mkhwanazi testified before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, submitting a letter from inmate Jermaine Prim claiming cellmate Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala boasted of links to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and shady deals. Critics like lawyer Barry Roux called Mkhwanazi a ‘gatekeeper’ for seemingly selective belief in the fraudster’s words, while supporters noted he provided the whole document.

The hearing spotlighted past inconsistencies, like his praise for Lieutenant-General Khan, fueling EFF accusations of dragging politics into SAPS feuds amid ANC defenses of his anti-corruption work.

General Mkhwanazi tried to read more parts of the contested Jermaine Prim letter at Ad Hoc Committee but evidence leaders insisted on focusing on one portion.

Mkhwanazi did not ‘choose parts of the letter to read.’ He submitted the whole letter. Evidence leaders directed him to specific paragraphs and he actively tried to read more but neither the evidence leaders nor MPs seemed interested. pic.twitter.com/88NGjfXCYa
