Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain, sending shockwaves through the football world. The 28-year-old was involved in a crash late Tuesday evening in Galicia, where the vehicle he was traveling in left the road and reportedly caught fire.

Emergency services responded but were unable to save Jota, who was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, André Jota, who was also in the car, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized in intensive care.

Liverpool Football Club released an emotional statement confirming the tragic loss:

“We are devastated to announce the passing of Diogo Jota. He was an extraordinary player and an even better person—beloved by teammates, staff, and fans. Our hearts go out to his family, especially his brother André, during this unbearable time.”

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly became a key player under manager Jürgen Klopp. Known for his relentless work rate and sharp finishing, he played a crucial role in the club’s success over the past four seasons.

Internationally, he earned more than 35 caps for Portugal, competing in major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. Portugal’s national team coach, Roberto Martínez, described him as “a leader and an inspiration” in a heartfelt tribute.

Fans worldwide have shared their grief on social media, with #RIPJota trending globally. Vigils are being planned in Liverpool, Porto, and Lisbon to honor his memory.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Jota leaves behind his partner and a young child. His loss is deeply felt across the football community, where he will be remembered for his talent, dedication, and kindness.
