After receiving no information from authorities six months after the crime stunned the community, the family of Siyanda Mthokozisi Mvelase, who was killed while driving for an e-hailing company, has expressed their concern that his horrible killing may be sliding into obscurity.

In August of the previous year, Mvelase was killed in a shooting that took place outside of Maponya Mall in Soweto. The incident aroused outrage and reignited concerns regarding the safety of e-hailing drivers who are operating in certain areas of the city.

On behalf of the family, relatives have expressed that they are becoming increasingly irritated and anxious due to the seeming lack of progress that has been made in the inquiry.

A member of Siyanda’s family has stated that we do not know who killed her or why they said it. The passage of six months has passed, and we have not been provided with any significant updates. Our concern is that the case might be overlooked.

According to the accounts that were available at the time of the occurrence, Mvelase was working when he was attacked close to the busy shopping center. It was later discovered that his vehicle had been burnt, and the driver had been found dead from his injuries. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots.

Shockwaves were sent through the Soweto transport community as a result of the appalling nature of the crime, particularly among e-hailing drivers who typically operate around big commercial hubs such as Maponya Mall.

In spite of the passage of time, Mvelase’s family claims that they have not been able to obtain any information regarding who was responsible for the killing or what possible motivation may have been behind it.

Immediately after the occurrence, the South African Police Service (SAPS) initiated an inquiry into the possible murder of the individual. On the other hand, relatives assert that there has been very little communication with investigators in the months that have passed since the incident.

Although we are aware that investigations take some time, we had anticipated receiving at least some feedback. A member of the family stated that even the knowledge that the investigation is still ongoing will provide us with some measure of solace.

The number of events involving robberies, hijackings, and violence that have been reported across Johannesburg and other regions of the country has increased in recent years, which has led to an increase in the number of safety concerns among drivers of e-hailing services.

On multiple occasions, leaders from the transportation industry have advocated for increased cooperation between law enforcement and e-hailing platforms in order to enhance the safety of drivers and prevent accidents of a similar nature.

In addition, members of the Soweto community have voiced their concern with the lack of progress that has been made in the case, and they have urged the authorities to guarantee that justice is carried out.

According to the bereaved family, their greatest desire is that the investigation into the crime will be redoubled and that those involved will be brought to justice.

According to the expression of the relative, “Our family will never be the same again.” Our only want is for Siyanda to receive justice.

Due to the fact that the investigation into the killing is still ongoing, the South African Police Service has issued a call to action to anyone who may have information that could be of assistance to the inquiry.
