A quiet evening turned into chaos on Monday night for a woman in Vosloorus Extension 25, when a red car came speeding down her street, screeched to a halt, and its driver later identified as businessman and political figure Brown Mogotsi allegedly stepped out wielding a firearm and began firing shots into the air.
The woman, still visibly shaken when speaking to reporters, described the terrifying scene that unfolded just before 9 p.m. “I was at home with my partner when I saw a red car speeding past. Moments later, it suddenly stopped. The man inside seemed to be on his phone. Then, out of nowhere, he got out with a gun and started shooting,” she recounted.
Her voice trembled as she recalled running barefoot for safety. “My partner and I ran in different directions. I didn’t even think twice I left my shoes behind. I just wanted to live. I could hear the shots echoing in the dark; it felt like something out of a nightmare,” she said.
According to witnesses, the gunman now confirmed as Mogotsi fired several rounds before getting back into his vehicle and speeding away. Police arrived shortly afterward, combing the area for spent cartridges and reviewing security footage from nearby homes.
Mogotsi, known for his deep political connections and frequent appearances before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry which is investigating criminality, corruption, and political interference within the criminal justice system has drawn widespread attention due to his alleged ties to powerful figures across various government sectors.
Law enforcement sources told reporters that an investigation into the shooting incident is underway, with detectives seeking to establish whether Mogotsi was firing warning shots, acting under duress, or attempting to intimidate someone. Police have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made.
The community of Extension 25 remains on edge, with residents expressing fear over the apparent ease with which politically connected individuals appear to act with impunity. “If someone with influence can do this and walk free, what about us ordinary people?” one resident asked.
As the investigation continues, the woman says she has been left deeply traumatised. “Every sound makes me jump now. I keep thinking what if he comes back?”
