In a pivotal courtroom session today, the inquiry into the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, the South African soccer legend, resumed, bringing to light crucial testimonies that may shape the course of the case. A pivotal moment in this ongoing investigation unfolded as Mr. Hadebe, a peace officer, took the stand and faced rigorous questioning from the prosecutor, Mr. Mshololo.

Mshololo pressed Hadebe on whether he had a role in booking out the prime suspect, Mr. Sibiya. Hadebe confirmed that, in line with standard procedure, the suspect would be brought to his office, where another individual would sign them out, following which he would commence the interview. Notably, he clarified that the actual responsibility of booking out a suspect rested with other officers, not himself.

Moreover, Hadebe elaborated on the presence of metro police officers guarding Sibiya in the police holding cells. He denied that their mere presence posed a threat to the suspect, as questioned by Mshololo. This exchange delved into the core of the investigation and the circumstances surrounding Sibiya’s initial detention.

The most striking revelation was the suspect’s understanding of the charges against him. Mshololo asserted that Sibiya believed he was arrested for drug dealing, highlighting an apparent miscommunication about the nature of his arrest. Hadebe cited that he was indeed informed of his arrest for drug dealing, making it clear that murder was considered secondary.

Crucially, when asked if Sibiya ever indicated that he was under arrest for murder, Hadebe responded with a definitive “No.” This testimony could have far-reaching implications for the ongoing murder investigation and may reshape the narrative surrounding Senzo Meyiwa’s tragic death. As the inquiry unfolds, more revelations and testimonies are expected to shed light on this high-profile case, potentially bringing closure to a long-pending mystery.

Court is in session.

Advocate Zandile Mshololo is cross-examining Lt-Col Nkosikhona Hadebe, starting by focusing on his 36 years of experience, in which he only did 5 pointings-out.
