State Capture Bombshell: Minister Mthethwa Received Luxury Car Bought with Crime Intelligence Cash

A shocking revelation has emerged from the State Capture Commission, implicating former Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa in yet another case of corruption within South Africa’s law enforcement system. The commission disclosed that Mthethwa was provided with a luxury Mercedes-Benz ML350, purchased using funds from the Crime Intelligence secret slush fund. The vehicle, reportedly worth around R373,850, was acquired between 2009 and 2010 and specifically procured for Mthethwa’s personal use – a move that underscores the systemic abuse of state resources during that era.

According to whistleblower Colonel Dhanajaya Naidoo, the slush fund was managed by then–Crime Intelligence head Richard Mdluli and was routinely used to buy high-end vehicles and luxury items. Naidoo revealed that Mthethwa was among several top officials who benefited from these questionable purchases. The commission heard that Mthethwa used the Mercedes-Benz for a brief period before returning it, allegedly after the media drew attention to the lavish acquisition.

The scandal highlights the deep-rooted corruption that plagued South Africa’s security structures and the blatant misuse of taxpayer money meant for national safety. Findings from the Auditor-General and the Zondo Commission have both confirmed that the Crime Intelligence slush fund was exploited for personal gain, funding expensive vehicles such as BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes for select officials.

Mthethwa’s association with the scandal has severely tainted his reputation and reignited public anger over the impunity enjoyed by politically connected individuals. Citizens are demanding transparency and accountability, urging authorities to ensure that those responsible for diverting public funds face justice.

As the State Capture Commission continues its investigations, the nation waits anxiously to see whether those who benefited from the looting of state coffers will finally be held accountable – or if this case will join a long list of unresolved corruption scandals in South Africa’s troubled political history.
