Acting Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has taken special leave following allegations presented at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Mkhwanazi has stated he is willing to testify if called by the commission.
The allegations against him stem from testimony linking him to a corruption scheme involving businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. According to a report from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Mkhwanazi was accused of contravening police disciplinary procedures by allegedly facilitating the fraudulent transfer of city-owned vehicles to Matlala’s private security company.
The IPID report recommended disciplinary action against Mkhwanazi. His decision to take special leave makes him one of the first officials to face immediate consequences from the ongoing commission’s revelations.
