The Correctional Supervision and Parole Board has approved the parole release of Donovan Moodley, who abducted and murdered university student Leigh Matthews in 2004.

Moodley, who was convicted for the brutal crime that shocked the nation, has served over 15 years of his sentence. His release on parole comes after extensive review by the board, which considered factors including his behaviour in prison, rehabilitation progress, and risk assessment.

The abduction and murder of Leigh Matthews, a 21-year-old student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, captured national attention due to the premeditated nature of the crime. Moodley lured Matthews to a farm, held her captive, and ultimately killed her, leaving a lasting impact on her family and the broader community.

The decision has reignited public debate over parole for violent offenders, with many questioning whether Moodley’s release appropriately balances rehabilitation with public safety. Authorities have stated that conditions of parole will be strictly enforced to monitor Moodley’s reintegration into society.
