President Cyril Ramaphosa has retained Police Minister Bheki Cele, defying public demands for his dismissal from former president and MK Party leader Jacob Zuma.

Zuma had called for Cele’s removal, citing a lack of public trust and alleged failures in policing. However, during a press conference at the Union Buildings, Ramaphosa made it clear that the appointment of Cabinet ministers is a presidential prerogative and he would not yield to external political pressure.

“The fight against crime is a top priority,” Ramaphosa stated, adding that he makes decisions in the national interest, not to appease special interest groups.

The move highlights the growing tensions between Ramaphosa and Zuma, whose MK Party is positioning itself as a major opposition force. Political analysts are divided on the impact of the decision; some believe it could widen political divisions, while others see it as a demonstration of strong leadership.

For now, Ramaphosa’s stance signals his intention to stand firm on his cabinet choices despite facing significant criticism.
