A manhunt is underway after an e-hailing driver was killed at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Tuesday evening. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of ride-hailing drivers and sparked calls for better security.

Police say the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was found fatally injured inside his car in the mall’s parking lot. Investigators believe he may have been attacked by people pretending to be passengers. Robbery is being considered as a possible motive, as the suspects took the driver’s belongings before fleeing.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed a murder case has been opened. “We are following leads and urge anyone with information to come forward,” he said. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to help identify the suspects.

The killing has angered many e-hailing drivers, who say they face growing risks on the job. Ride-hailing companies have offered condolences and promised to assist in the investigation. Drivers are being reminded to use safety features like in-app emergency buttons and share trip details with trusted contacts.

Local leaders and community groups have condemned the attack, demanding stronger security in public areas and tougher punishments for criminals. Maponya Mall officials say they are increasing patrols to improve safety.

Police are still searching for the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or their nearest police station. The victim’s family and coworkers are grieving the loss of a hardworking man whose life was taken too soon.
