“Focus on Politics”: Lawyer Teffo Claps Back at Malema Over Meyiwa Case Comments

A video of advocate Malesela Teffo responding to EFF leader Julius Malema’s remarks about the Senzo Meyiwa murder case has gone viral on social media. In the clip, filmed in a courtroom setting, Teffo – dressed in his legal robes with court documents visible – calmly urges Malema to stick to politics and let lawyers handle legal matters.

The exchange stems from Malema’s recent comments at an EFF press conference where he addressed questions about the high-profile Meyiwa case. Teffo argues that political figures should avoid interfering in ongoing legal proceedings, stating: “Mr. Malema should focus on his political duties and personal affairs, while I focus on my legal practice and this important case.”

The video highlights growing tensions between South Africa’s political and judicial spheres. Legal experts have long warned that political commentary on active cases could undermine public trust in the justice system. Teffo’s measured response, delivered in the formal setting of a courtroom, reinforces his position as a legal professional guarding against outside influence.

Public reaction has been divided, with some praising Teffo for defending judicial independence, while others argue public figures have a right to comment on matters of national interest. The Meyiwa case, involving the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain, remains one of South Africa’s most watched legal proceedings.

As the video continues circulating, it raises important questions about where to draw the line between political free speech and protecting the integrity of court cases – a debate likely to continue as the Meyiwa trial progresses.
