Old Video of Cyril Ramaphosa Sparks Debate Over Leadership Priorities

A 2018 video clip of President Cyril Ramaphosa has gone viral again, stirring strong reactions across South Africa.

In the clip, Ramaphosa says:

“I would rather be seen as a weak president than split the ANC because that is not my mission.”

The statement has reignited heated discussions as the country grapples with unemployment, power cuts, and service delivery failures. Many are questioning whether putting the ANC’s unity above decisive leadership was the right choice.

Social media platforms like Twitter (X), Facebook, and TikTok are flooded with mixed reactions. Some defend Ramaphosa, saying he aimed to stabilize the ANC after Jacob Zuma’s presidency. Others argue the clip reveals misplaced priorities, with one user commenting:

“South Africa needed strong leadership, not a leader who put the party first.”

Another wrote:
“This explains why so little has changed—the focus was never on the people.”

As the 2026 elections near and trust in political parties declines, old statements like this are fueling new debates.

What do you think? Was Ramaphosa being honest, or did his approach fail South Africa? Share your views below.
