DA Demands Probe Into Ekurhuleni Official’s Ties to Alleged Crime Syndicate

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is pushing for an urgent investigation into the relationship between Ekurhuleni’s Julius Mkhwanazi and businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, following serious corruption and political interference claims.

The call comes after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, publicly accused high-ranking officials—including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu—of obstructing probes into political killings and organized crime. Matlala, a suspected crime boss linked to armed robberies and cash-in-transit heists, is alleged to be at the center of a network with ties to state institutions.

Authorities are examining possible financial and communication links between Matlala and politicians, with suspicions that key investigations were sabotaged to shield his syndicate. Matlala was recently arrested for attempted murder, intensifying scrutiny over his alleged role in violent crimes.

The DA insists that exposing the full extent of Mkhwanazi and Matlala’s connection is vital to restoring trust in Ekurhuleni’s governance. As South Africa faces growing concerns about criminal networks infiltrating government, opposition leaders and the public are demanding answers—and accountability—from officials potentially involved.
