A high-ranking South African Police Service (SAPS) official, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday in connection with corruption allegations.

Khumalo, the divisional commissioner for crime intelligence, was taken into custody, though authorities have not yet disclosed full details of the charges.

Henry Mamothame, from the National Prosecuting Authority’s investigative directorate, confirmed the arrest but said further information would only be provided once Khumalo and others involved appear in court.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola acknowledged the arrest, stating that Khumalo had personally informed him but that the exact reasons remained unclear.

Unnamed police sources linked the arrest to corruption-related offenses.

Ian Cameron, chair of Parliament’s police portfolio committee, expressed concern over the arrest, calling it another blow to SAPS leadership. This follows the recent arrest of another senior officer, General Lushaba.

Cameron emphasized the need for a skills and integrity audit within SAPS, citing ongoing leadership crises. He had earlier hinted that Khumalo’s arrest was tied to alleged misconduct, including irregular appointments and misuse of crime intelligence funds.

The case has raised further questions about accountability and governance in the police service.
