Fired SAFA Official Denies Leaking R10 Million Payment Details, Claims Unfair Dismissal

Former SAFA media officer Namhla Mphelo has broken her silence following her dismissal over allegations she leaked sensitive information about a R10 million payment to SAFA president Danny Jordaan. The 11-year veteran of the football association maintains her innocence, calling the claims “baseless.”

Mphelo confirmed to Metro FM’s MSW that she accessed SAFA’s financial systems but insisted this fell within her authorized duties as team manager for the Under-17 girls’ squad. “I acted within my rights and never shared any confidential documents with NEC members,” she stated.

The controversy stems from February when Mphelo was suspended before being formally terminated on April 7 after an internal disciplinary process. She has since filed an unfair dismissal case with the CCMA, with hearings scheduled for May 20, 2025.

The dismissed official alleges procedural irregularities in her case, suggesting she’s being scapegoated for a leak potentially committed by others. “The truth will come out at the CCMA,” Mphelo said, expressing confidence in clearing her name and fighting for reinstatement.

SAFA has yet to publicly detail the specific evidence behind the termination. The R10 million payment at the center of the dispute remains unexplained by the football body. Observers note the case emerges amid ongoing scrutiny of SAFA’s financial governance.

Mphelo’s challenge at the CCMA could force disclosure of internal SAFA communications and access logs that might clarify who viewed or distributed the sensitive payment information.
