Kaizer Chiefs’ struggles in the Betway Premiership persisted on Saturday as they fell 2-1 to Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium, dropping to ninth place in the standings. Amakhosi have now managed just 30 points from 25 matches this season, leaving their supporters frustrated after another disappointing home performance.

Coming into the match, Chiefs were desperate to end a five-game winless streak, while Gallants aimed to extend their unbeaten run to five matches. The hosts started brightly, with new fan favorite Glody Lilepo breaking the deadlock in spectacular fashion. The winger dribbled past four defenders before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Washington Arubi helpless and sending the home crowd into celebration.

However, Chiefs failed to build on their early lead, allowing Gallants to gradually take control. Just before halftime, Daniel Msendami forced a save from Bruce Bvuma, and defender Matome Mathiane reacted quickest to tap in the rebound, leveling the score.

Gallants carried their momentum into the second half and sealed their comeback in the 70th minute. Msendami, a constant threat, stepped up to curl a superb free-kick past Bvuma, silencing the home fans who had been hopeful after Chiefs’ recent Nedbank Cup final qualification.

The win was a significant boost for Gallants and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, marking his fifth victory in 11 games since replacing Dan Malesela. The result moved them to 10th place, level on 30 points with Chiefs but ahead on goal difference.

With Chippa United currently holding the final MTN8 qualification spot, both teams face increasing pressure as the season approaches its climax. For Chiefs, the defeat adds to a deeply underwhelming campaign, raising doubts over their ability to secure a top-eight finish.

With only a few matches remaining, Amakhosi must find a way to turn their form around quickly if they hope to salvage anything from a season that has failed to live up to expectations.
