Mbalula Says ANC Bears Greater Responsibility Than DA to Run South Africa

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula stated that if the DA wants South Africa to function, they “will come to the party.”

The ANC has been engaging with various Government of National Unity (GNU) partners to stabilize a coalition strained by disagreements over the national budget.

Recent discussions between the ANC and DA leadership were described as “constructive,” aimed at resolving the budget deadlock and reshaping the GNU. The two parties met on Saturday, with DA federal council chair Helen Zille leading the DA delegation.

Following tensions over the DA’s refusal to support the budget’s fiscal framework, Zille affirmed the party’s commitment to finding solutions in South Africa’s best interests.

Mbalula told eNCA that the ANC passed the fiscal framework without the DA’s support.

“We have the bigger responsibility than the DA and everyone else to run this country, to lead as the leading party. Answers are expected from us, not from the DA—they have the luxury of pursuing political victories even where it’s unnecessary,” he said.

Mbalula emphasized that the ANC wants South Africa “to function.”

“If they [the DA] are interested in this country functioning, they will come to the party. We all want South Africa to succeed. Should this country be reduced to rubble due to reckless decisions? Should the ANC act like a small puppy in the GNU? No, we have a much bigger responsibility than anyone,” he said.

He added that despite pressure from some ANC members to exclude the DA, the party prioritizes national interests.

“South Africa must come first. For those of us with only one passport, South Africa must be defended at all costs. South Africa must win—that’s what matters,” Mbalula stated.

Earlier this month, the National Assembly approved the national budget, with 194 MPs in favor and 182 opposed. However, several parties, including the DA, have contested the budget, with the DA challenging it in the Western Cape High Court.
