MK Party Wins KwaDukuza By-Election in Major Shift, ANC Support Declines Sharply

The uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party has secured a decisive victory in the KwaDukuza Ward 28 by-election, winning 62% of the vote in a result that signals a dramatic shift in the local political landscape. The African National Congress (ANC), which previously held the ward with 78% support, suffered a significant setback, dropping to just 35%. The outcome highlights the growing influence of the MK Party in KwaZulu-Natal, where it continues to erode the ANC’s traditional support base.

The by-election was fiercely contested, with the MK Party mobilizing strong grassroots backing. Analysts suggest that dissatisfaction with service delivery, governance failures, and internal ANC divisions contributed to the party’s decline in the ward.

*”This result reflects a broader trend we’ve been seeing in KZN, where the MK Party is emerging as a major force, particularly in former ANC strongholds,”* said political analyst Dr. Sibusiso Ntuli. The ANC’s sharp drop in support is likely to raise concerns within the party’s leadership as it struggles to maintain dominance ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

Since its formation, the MK Party has gained significant electoral ground, positioning itself as a viable alternative to the ANC. Its latest victory follows a series of strong performances in by-elections across KwaZulu-Natal.

MK Party spokesperson Thabo Mpanza hailed the result as proof of public demand for change. *”The people of KwaDukuza have spoken. They are tired of empty promises and failed governance. This is just the beginning,”* he said.

With the ANC’s support declining, party insiders acknowledge the need for urgent reforms. A senior ANC member in the province, speaking anonymously, admitted the result should serve as a wake-up call. *”We must reconnect with our base and rebuild trust. The results show people are frustrated, and we need to address their concerns.”*

The MK Party’s victory in KwaDukuza increases pressure on the ANC as political dynamics in KwaZulu-Natal continue to shift. With more by-elections approaching, observers will be watching to see if the MK Party can sustain its momentum and reshape the province’s political landscape.
