KZN Police Commissioner Accused of Interfering in Arrest of Senior Correctional Official Linked to Drug Cartel

Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, faces serious allegations of obstructing the arrest of a senior Department of Correctional Services (DCS) official accused of operating a drug cartel within Westville Maximum Prison. These claims have raised concerns about the integrity of law enforcement in combating organized crime in South Africa.

Westville Prison has long been under scrutiny for contraband smuggling and organized criminal activity. A major raid in August 2024, led by National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale, uncovered cash, drugs, cellphones, routers, and other illegal items, exposing corruption and the involvement of inmates and officials in criminal networks.

The allegations against Mkhwanazi suggest he may have interfered in efforts to apprehend a high-ranking DCS official linked to these operations. If true, such actions would undermine the fight against corruption and raise doubts about the leadership’s commitment to accountability.

Ironically, Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi has been a vocal critic of corruption within correctional facilities, previously labeling prisons as “academies of crime” due to inmates orchestrating criminal activities from behind bars. In December 2024, he noted that “the majority of these crimes… are organized behind bars,” emphasizing the need for stringent measures to address the issue.

The situation presents a complex narrative: a senior law enforcement figure accused of hindering justice while publicly condemning the same systemic issues. This has prompted widespread calls for transparency and a thorough investigation to determine the validity of the allegations.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services have yet to release official statements regarding the matter. Meanwhile, public and stakeholder demands for an impartial inquiry underscore the urgency of restoring confidence in the criminal justice system.

This case highlights the broader challenges facing South Africa’s institutions in combating corruption and organized crime. Resolving these issues is vital to rebuilding public trust and ensuring the integrity of law enforcement and correctional systems.
