Pietermaritzburg and the nation are united in mourning the loss of Yusuf Bhamjee, a revered ANC stalwart whose legacy as a freedom fighter, public servant, and custodian of South Africa’s history will remain etched in memory. Bhamjee, who was hospitalized earlier this week, passed away this morning, leaving behind a profound legacy of dedication and leadership.

Bhamjee’s political journey began in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, where his unwavering commitment to liberation and social justice gained recognition. Serving as Mayor of the Umgungundlovu District Municipality, he demonstrated a clear vision for development and inclusive governance. He later represented his constituency in the National Assembly, bringing his passion and integrity to the national stage before retiring from active politics.

Beyond his political accomplishments, Bhamjee’s enduring impact was felt in his efforts to preserve South Africa’s history. As a co-founder of the Nelson Mandela Marathon, alongside former municipal manager Dr. Sibusiso Khuzwayo, Bhamjee sought to immortalize a pivotal chapter in the country’s liberation struggle. The annual marathon retraced Nelson Mandela’s steps from Imbali Township in Pietermaritzburg to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, symbolizing Mandela’s final moments of freedom before his 1962 arrest.

This historic journey commemorates Mandela’s escape following his address at the All Africa Conference at Manaye Hall in Imbali. Despite his efforts to evade arrest, Mandela was captured shortly afterward in an operation reportedly assisted by the CIA. The marathon served as a powerful tribute to Mandela’s resilience and the sacrifices of countless others who fought for liberation.

While the event was later discontinued due to ownership disputes, its significance endures, representing a bridge between South Africa’s past and present.

Yusuf Bhamjee’s passing leaves a profound void in South Africa’s political and cultural landscape. His contributions to democracy, governance, and historical preservation exemplify his selflessness and dedication to the people of South Africa.

Bhamjee’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to uphold the values of integrity, service, and remembrance. As South Africans reflect on his life, they celebrate not only a leader but also a visionary whose work will forever resonate in the nation’s history.
