Floyd Shivambu: The Strategic Mind Behind the EFF’s Rise

In the high-stakes world of South African politics, few figures command as much intrigue as Floyd Shivambu, the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Known for his composed demeanor and incisive rhetoric, Shivambu’s role within the party has often been the subject of speculation. Recent remarks from political analysts and rivals have reignited debate over his influence as the EFF’s chief strategist.

Prominent political analyst and author Prince Mashele described Shivambu as the true force behind the EFF, stating, “Julius [Malema] is just a face, and Floyd is the engine or computer box. That thing was built by Floyd.” This perspective highlights a view that Shivambu, though less visible than the charismatic Malema, is the intellectual architect of the party’s operations.

This sentiment has been echoed by figures across the political spectrum. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula once asserted, “That thing without Floyd is dead,” emphasizing Shivambu’s strategic importance. Even Helen Zille, Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA), remarked, “Floyd is the only one with a brain in that party.” While Zille’s words were pointed, they underscored Shivambu’s reputation as a sharp thinker and tactician.

Since its founding in 2013, the EFF has rapidly become South Africa’s third-largest political party, known for its radical leftist ideology, fiery rhetoric, and parliamentary disruption. While Malema’s charisma and public persona have driven the party’s public image, insiders suggest Shivambu’s contributions—spanning policy development, organizational strategy, and structural oversight—are foundational to the EFF’s success.

Critics, however, argue that attributing the party’s achievements to Shivambu alone undermines Malema’s role as the EFF’s founder and ideological leader. The interplay between Malema’s bold leadership and Shivambu’s strategic planning, they contend, is what truly fuels the party’s momentum.

As the EFF navigates its next chapter in South Africa’s political landscape, the dynamics between its public figurehead and its behind-the-scenes strategist remain a focal point of intrigue. Whether Shivambu’s influence continues to grow or remains in the shadows, his impact on the party’s trajectory is undeniable.
