The death of Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, who represented accused no. 1 in the high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, has triggered widespread criticism of Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng for his earlier comments about the late lawyer’s health.

Mngomezulu’s family confirmed his passing in a statement, revealing that he had been hospitalized due to health issues prior to his death. However, a resurfaced video of Judge Mokgoathleng questioning the legitimacy of Mngomezulu’s health-related court absences has ignited a social media backlash, with many calling the remarks insensitive and unprofessional.

In the video, Judge Mokgoathleng is heard doubting Mngomezulu’s illness, stating, “Some people claim they saw him in the corridors of the court.” The comments, perceived by many as trivializing Mngomezulu’s condition, have drawn sharp criticism.

Former Eskom CEO Matshela Koko shared the video on social media, accusing the judge of dishonesty. “Judges do spread the lies, too. At least Adv. Mshololo called it what it is. People lie even about people who are on their deathbeds!” Koko wrote.

Another social media user condemned the judge’s handling of Mngomezulu’s absence, saying, “He was not fair to Advocate Mngomezulu; he has not been a fair judge to the defense! On this day, he read Mngomezulu’s sick letter more than five times.”

Mngomezulu’s role in the Senzo Meyiwa trial was pivotal, and his passing has created a significant void in the case, which has already faced numerous challenges. The controversy surrounding Judge Mokgoathleng’s comments adds further tension to the trial, which remains under intense public scrutiny.

As the legal community and the public mourn Advocate Mngomezulu’s death, his dedication to his clients and contributions to the case are being remembered. The incident has also reignited discussions about professionalism and sensitivity within the judiciary, raising questions about the balance between rigorous legal proceedings and respect for human dignity.
