King Misuzulu Addresses Security Breach at King Shaka Statue Unveiling

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has spoken out following a dramatic security breach during the unveiling of King Shaka’s statue at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport on November 7, 2024. The event, attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and high-profile dignitaries, celebrated the enduring legacy of King Shaka, the founder of the Zulu nation.

The proceedings took an unexpected turn when an unidentified woman, barefoot and dressed in a cream gown, attempted to storm the stage where King Misuzulu and President Ramaphosa were seated. Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, disembarking from a shuttle meant for guests, ascended the stage stairs while shouting demands to speak with the king. Security personnel intervened swiftly, restraining her after she allegedly resisted and struck two officers.

In a statement following the incident, King Misuzulu expressed regret over the disruption but emphasized his commitment to preserving the unity and dignity of the Zulu nation. “Such incidents, while unfortunate, should not detract from our mission to honor the legacy of our forebears and to move forward with unity,” the king remarked.

The incident has further highlighted tensions within the Zulu royal family. Since the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini in 2021, King Misuzulu’s reign has faced legal disputes from some family members over his ascension to the throne, despite official recognition by President Ramaphosa.

Despite the disruption, the unveiling of the 12-meter statue of King Shaka proceeded as planned. The towering tribute celebrates King Shaka’s legacy as a warrior and unifier, embodying the resilience and pride of the Zulu people. The statue’s installation at the international airport aims to symbolize both cultural heritage and a message of strength and unity.

The incident has sparked conversations about security at high-profile events and the ongoing challenges faced by the Zulu monarchy in navigating internal divisions while maintaining its cultural significance.

Kaizer Chiefs Star Pule Mmodi Sparks Controversy After Slamming Teammates Over Dropped Points

October 3, 2025

Fikile Mbalula, the secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC), has defended himself against what he called “malicious attempts” to damage his reputation, stating that he cannot stand by and watch while his integrity is publicly questioned. Mbalula responded to mounting criticism of his leadership role in the ANC and his involvement in internal conflicts during a media briefing on Wednesday. He emphasised that his response was motivated by principle rather than conceit. When my reputation is being tarnished, I must take a position. People will see my silence as an admission of guilt if I remain silent. I owe it to the movement I support, my family, and myself to make things clear,” he stated. The comments coincide with increased political tensions inside the ANC, where senior officials are being scrutinised due to disagreements about coalition tactics and policy direction. Mbalula declared that his contribution to the party would not be overshadowed by “falsehoods and political agendas.” “Being a leader is not simple. Even when you make choices that not everyone will agree with, you have to stand by them. I refuse to be intimidated by efforts to undermine me. My record is self-evident,” he continued. The very vocal Mbalula admitted that his leadership style has drawn both praise and criticism. But he maintained that the ANC’s credibility and keeping its pledges to South Africans should continue to be the major priorities. “This nation’s citizens are keeping an eye on us. They are looking for solutions, answers, and moral leadership. My attention is on it, not on trivial diversions,” he declared. Political observers point out that Mbalula’s most recent remarks demonstrate the escalating strain on the ANC leadership, especially as the party prepares for the upcoming election cycle. His insistence on preserving his reputation highlights the fine line that leaders must draw between their own moral character and group accountability. For the time being, Mbalula insists he would keep speaking out whenever his name is associated with accusations he believes are baseless. He declared, “Although I have never shied away from accountability, I will not let lies define me.”
