ANC Youth League Calls for Julius Malema’s Return to the ANC, Citing Need for Unity Ahead of 2024 Elections

  • ANC Youth League President Collen Malatji urges EFF leader Julius Malema to rejoin the ANC, calling his 2012 expulsion “reckless” with lasting political impacts.
  • Malatji believes Malema’s influence and energy would strengthen the ANC, particularly in addressing socio-economic challenges.
  • This outreach reflects the ANC Youth League’s effort to assert its voice and navigate coalition possibilities as South Africa’s 2024 elections approach.

Collen Malatji, President of the ANC Youth League, recently made a bold appeal for Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), to return to his former political home, the African National Congress (ANC). Speaking to a crowd of ANC supporters, Malatji described Malema’s 2012 expulsion as a “reckless” and “harsh” decision, which he believes weakened the ANC and had long-lasting political effects. This call for reconciliation comes at a critical time as the ANC and EFF navigate complex political landscapes ahead of the 2024 national elections.

“Julius is one of us, and he should come back home. The decision to expel him was reckless and did more harm than good. He is a child of the ANC, and there is always a place for him here,” Malatji said, emphasizing that Malema’s influence and political energy could serve the ANC better than opposing it. Malema was expelled in 2012 after disciplinary hearings over his critical comments toward ANC leadership, leading him to establish the EFF, which has since grown into a powerful opposition force in South African politics. While Malema has frequently criticized the ANC and its leaders, Malatji remains optimistic, expressing that “the rift between Malema and his former political home can still be healed.”

This invitation for Malema’s return aligns with growing discussions about coalition possibilities in the lead-up to 2024, as political dynamics shift and both parties seek new strategies. Although Malema has yet to respond to Malatji’s overture, he has previously dismissed rejoining the ANC, accusing it of losing touch with the public. Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League, under Malatji’s leadership, aims to strengthen its position within the ANC by advocating for youth empowerment and increased political engagement. The league’s outreach highlights an acknowledgment of Malema’s considerable influence, with Malatji hopeful that unity can be prioritized to address South Africa’s pressing socio-economic challenges.
