In a shocking case that has shaken the community of Sabie, Mpumalanga, a 44-year-old pastor has been arrested on charges of raping a teenage relative, betraying the trust of his congregation and family members. The incident, which occurred on October 3, 2024, has left the victim’s family devastated and questioning their faith in religious leadership.
According to reports, the pastor, who is also related to the victim, allegedly called the Grade 11 student to his home under the pretense of praying for an infection on her leg. The victim’s aunt, speaking to the Daily Sun, described the harrowing sequence of events that followed:
“She told him she was uncomfortable with what he was doing, but he continued touching her. She tried to fight him off, but he overpowered her and pushed her to the bedroom, where he undressed and forcefully slept with her,” the aunt alleged.
The case took an even more disturbing turn when it was revealed that the pastor allegedly sent WhatsApp voice messages to the victim after the assault. In these messages, which the Daily Sun claims to possess, the pastor reportedly expressed admiration for the victim’s strength and urged her to delete the messages, claiming their relationship was a “divine connection.”
The victim reported the assault to her family on October 5, leading to the pastor’s arrest. He appeared in the Sabie Magistrate Court on October 11, facing charges of rape and possession of an unlicensed firearm. His case has been postponed to October 17 for bail information.
The incident has left the community reeling, with family members expressing their shock and disappointment. The victim’s aunt stated, “We trusted him with everything, but he took advantage of that. We even shared our problems with him, and he would provide counseling services. We never thought he was capable of doing such awful things.”
Another family member revealed that there had been previous rumors about the pastor’s inappropriate behavior towards young girls, which were unfortunately dismissed at the time. “We’re angry because he took advantage of the kid’s vulnerability. We trusted him as a leader, not knowing he’s sneaking on our kids. We don’t want to see him in this community again,” she said.
Mpumalanga police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdluli has called for other potential victims to come forward, suggesting that this may not be an isolated incident.
This case highlights the devastating impact of sexual abuse within trusted institutions and families. It underscores the importance of taking all allegations seriously and the need for communities to create safe spaces for victims to speak out.
As the legal process unfolds, the community of Sabie is left to grapple with the betrayal of trust and the challenge of healing in the wake of such a shocking revelation.
