Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho, already facing charges for allegedly murdering her niece for a R3 million life insurance policy, has been hit with a new murder charge. This time, she is accused of poisoning her son, Kutlo Setshwantsho, with a burger laced with poison during a trip from Cape Town to their Northern Cape home last year. The motive behind this shocking crime is said to be financial gain, as she had fraudulently obtained a R6 million life cover policy in her son’s name.
Setshwantsho appeared briefly in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape, where she was formally charged with her son’s murder. In addition to the new murder charge, she faces another fraud charge. The State alleges that she deliberately poisoned Kutlo to benefit from the substantial life insurance policy she had secured in his name.
The circumstances surrounding Kutlo’s death were initially believed to be from “natural causes,” but investigations by Sergeant Keshi Mabunda led to Setshwantsho’s arrest. The State claims that during their journey from Cape Town, the accused stopped at a petrol station, where she bought her son a burger, which she then allegedly laced with poison.
This latest revelation adds to Setshwantsho’s already gruesome list of charges, including the murder of her niece, Bonolo Modiseemang. The accused allegedly took out a R3 million life insurance policy in her niece’s name three months before poisoning her. Setshwantsho’s bail application for the niece’s murder was denied last month.
Setshwantsho is also under investigation for the deaths of her brother, husband, and two daughters. Her case has been postponed to March 13, and as the investigation unfolds, the extent of the alleged serial murders and insurance fraud continues to shock the community.
