South Africa Establishes Special Police Unit to Address Political Killings in Gauteng

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced the creation of a specialized Political Killings Task Team for Gauteng province, modeled after a similar successful unit in KwaZulu-Natal. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed the new unit will prioritize investigating high-profile cases of politically motivated murders and attempted assassinations.

“Crimes that are motivated by politics present a significant risk to democratic procedures and the maintenance of peace,” Masemola stated. “Given the centrality of Gauteng, it is impossible to leave it unprotected.”

The decision comes as Gauteng experiences increasing political conflicts and factional violence within municipalities. The new task team will consist of experienced detectives, intelligence agents, and forensic specialists who will collaborate with the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, and the National Prosecuting Authority.

The KwaZulu-Natal task team, established in 2018, has investigated hundreds of cases involving intra-party rivalry, corruption-related disputes, and local government conflicts. The Gauteng unit aims to replicate this approach to prevent further escalation of political violence in the province.

Political analysts have welcomed the move while cautioning that rising political tensions in Gauteng show early signs of violence that could destabilize local governance if left unaddressed. Civil society organizations have emphasized the need for transparency and independence in the unit’s operations, warning against political interference that has hampered sensitive investigations in the past.

Commissioner Masemola assured the public that the unit would “function independently and with integrity,” adding that those who attempt to undermine democracy through violence would face “the full force of the law.”

The establishment of this specialized team represents a significant step in addressing politically motivated violence, though its success will depend on effective coordination, judicial resilience, and sustained political commitment to combating this national concern.
