Grade 11 learner misses exams after being kidnapped and raped by school security guard

A distressing incident unfolded last week in Allemansdrift, Mpumalanga, where a grade 11 learner faced a harrowing experience that no one should endure. The 16-year-old student, the first to arrive at school that fateful Friday at 6 AM, found herself in a nightmare orchestrated by the very person entrusted with ensuring safety – the school security guard.

The alleged perpetrator, Stephen Makgobatlou, also known as Simon Matome, reportedly approached the learner with a fabricated story about a potential intruder. Using an iron rod as a menacing tool, he coerced her from her classroom, threatening violence if she resisted. Tragically, the student was then forced into the bushes, where she became a victim of a heinous crime.

The survivor managed to seize an opportunity when the security guard momentarily left her unattended to purchase food. Fearful for her life, she defied his instructions, fled in the opposite direction, and sought help. The brave young woman promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the 48-year-old suspect that same evening.

The school, considered a second home for learners, became the setting for a deeply distressing event. Brigadier Selvy Mohlala of the Mpumalanga police expressed the gravity of the situation, confirming the arrest and subsequent charges of rape against the accused. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General, Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, emphasized the severity of crimes committed within the confines of educational institutions, stating unequivocally that those responsible must face the consequences.

As the legal proceedings unfold, justice must be served swiftly and decisively. The community and educational authorities must unite in a commitment to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future. In the face of this painful episode, the resilience and courage exhibited by the survivor should inspire a collective effort to create safer spaces for all students, where learning can take place without fear or threat.
