Ndebele Chief Maraba of Ndebele founded a village situated just to the south of the present Marabastad, ruled it and it was named Maraba after him. When some of the Voortrekkers (pioneers) who were the descendents of the Dutch settlers in the Cape, migrated north from the Cape seeking to establish a republic outside the boundaries of the British Empire, they arrived in the area, they named it Marabastad meaning Maraba’s Town in Dutch.
The ancestors of the Ndebeles of Zimbabwe lived in the area, the arrival of the Voortrekkers from across the Vaal river in 1836 resulted in a series of clashes with the Ndebele who were eventually forced to move north across the Limpopo River.
