It ended in tears for four loan sharks aged between 21 and 37 after they were apprehended by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit on charges of Fraud, Contravention of the National Credit Act, and Bribery in Meadowlands, Soweto. Yesterday, on May 25, 2023, officers received a tip-off regarding individuals in possession of Identity Documents, Sassa Cards, and Bank Cards that did not belong to them.
Acting on this information, the officers promptly proceeded to the specified address in Meadowlands Zone 4, where they discovered four men present. A thorough search of the premises was conducted, leading to the discovery of over 100 ID books and cards, 50 Bank Cards, 20 Sassa Cards, and 10 Driving Licenses. Upon questioning, the suspects claimed that the confiscated items belonged to their clients, who had borrowed money from them. When asked if their business was legally registered as a credit provider, they admitted it was not.
While the officers were explaining the illegal nature of obtaining a consumer’s ID or cards, the suspects audaciously attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of R700 in exchange for their release. Without hesitation, the suspects were immediately apprehended and taken into custody at Meadowlands SAPS, where all the seized evidence was properly documented. The suspects are expected to face legal proceedings in the near future.
