Tragedy struck for Khomotso Mafolo, a young graduate from the University of Mpumalanga, as she lost three family members in a devastating car accident just hours before her graduation ceremony.
The incident occurred as her father, Jacob Mafolo, her sister, Metron Sekgoka, and her twin brother, Kamogelo Mafolo, were en route to attend Khomotso’s momentous occasion.
The ill-fated journey ended abruptly when their vehicle collided with a truck, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of all three family members. Emergency services pronounced them deceased at the scene, leaving Khomotso devastated and grieving the loss of her loved ones.
In the wake of this tragic accident, friends and relatives have come forward to offer their condolences and support to the Mafolo family during this difficult time.
Following the incident, the Mpumalanga Police have opened a case of culpable homicide, signaling their intent to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Khomotso herself took to social media, specifically TikTok, to confirm the devastating news and express her grief. In a heartfelt statement, she shared, “Lost my dad, my twin brother and my sister on my graduation day. They were coming to attend my graduation then God decided otherwise. Daddy, your princess did this for you.”
The resilient young woman had completed her Bachelor of Development Studies at the University of Mpumalanga, and she now intends to pursue an Honours degree in the same field of study, demonstrating her determination to honor her family’s memory and achieve her educational goals.
The University of Mpumalanga had scheduled graduation ceremonies on May 12 and 13, 2023, to commemorate the accomplishments of graduates who had successfully completed their academic qualifications during the preceding year. Unfortunately, Khomotso’s joyous milestone was eclipsed by the heartbreaking loss she experienced just hours before the ceremony.
As the Mafolo family mourns their irreplaceable losses, the community stands in solidarity with them, offering solace and support during this unimaginably challenging period.
